The Spiritual Logs:
Homosexuality is a confusing aspect of our society. It is prominently displayed in movies and on TV. Some of us work around openly homosexual coworkers and don’t think about it too much. The homosexual population seems to have been relegated to the list of minority populations along with African Americans, Latinos and others. Homosexuality, however, is also prominently mentioned in the bible, which makes it somewhat different from the average minority. The bible strongly condemns homosexuality and that, along with their own aversion to it, makes some people hate those practicing it. Some have even gone on the offensive and committed hate crimes against them. Someone trying to be a Christian should remember the words of Jesus at Matthew 9:32 when he told us to be “cautious as serpents and yet innocent as doves”. Hate crimes are not innocent. Some people probably find it difficult to ignore homosexuality just because it is so different from our own natural thought process.
One thing I find puzzling is when I hear of homosexuals wanting to worship God in some way. It’s not as if homosexuals were never mentioned in the bible. Maybe some do not believe in the bible. Some probably do not believe that it applies to them. They believe that they were born homosexual so it is completely and totally natural. Is that possible? Could someone actually be born that way? I have heard the theory that the homosexual was usually molested when young and-or, they have converted themselves through their own sexual appetite. It is true, though, that many people are born with obvious differences from what we would call normal. For example, some people are born with a whithered hand or a short leg. I think it may very well be possible for a person to be born with homosexual tendencies. It may be possible for homosexuality to be a defect, the same as someone having a genetic defect like scoliosis. All of this is just theory of course and whatever the truth is may never be fully understood.
Having said that, I still think the bible comes from Jehovah God and it is the authority. Regardless of the actual cause the bible clearly denounces homosexuality. So if a person finds himself wrestling with homosexual desires, he or she should do their best to resist the wrong desire. That may sound impossible but Jehovah God would not expect us to do something impossible. In the past some have successfully remained mate free for the sake of their devotion. Maybe it could be compared to someone with a mental defect resisting the desire to commit murder. It may not be easy but not resisting would be wrong. Keep in mind that our efforts are never in vain, as Hebrews points out in chapter 6 verse 10: “For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name,” Resisting homosexuality may also keep a person from stumbling someone who is confused about their own sexuality.
13 And when a man lies down with a male the same as one lies down with a woman, both of them have done a detestable thing. They should be put to death without fail. Their own blood is upon them.
26 That is why God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; 27 and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full recompense, which was due for their error.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10:
9 What! Do you not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, 10 nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom.
