Is it just a history story book or is it The Word of God? Some may question the bible as the word of God because of the behaviors of some very bad examples. Mohandas K. Gandhi once said: "I love Christ, but I despise Christians because they do not live as Christ lived". The bible is also a very old book and its values are considered by many to be out of date. There are, on the other hand, some good reasons to believe that the bible is actually a message from our Creator.
I believe the bible does originate from our Creator and hope to make a good case for my belief. If the bible is from God it should exhibit signs of a superior intelligence and its message should be helpful to us.
Is the bible helpful? It's not like money. For the bible to help someone would require that they read it and apply its advice. That can take time and a lot of effort, but there are many examples of people who have done it and are glad they did. Most would say that the bible is actually more valuable than money. The bible can be very motivational. Motivation is required if it is going to help anyone. The idea that it comes from God doesn't hurt. To get started we can look at some examples of the advice that is found in the bible.
Since we have already mentioned money we can start there. The bible tells us that "the love of money is a root of all sorts of injurious things" (1Timothy 6:10). It's not the money itself but it is the LOVE of money that is harmful. Then the bible continues: "by reaching out for this love some have been led astray from the faith and have stabbed themselves all over with many pains". Some have been successful in the quest for money but many more have lost families and have many regrets because of the money seeking choices they have made. Even with success there is no guarantee of happiness. The bible suggests that many other things are more important than money. Herein rests the value of the bible. The bibles value is based in its principles. When we make decisions based on those principles we may not get rich but we benefit in other ways. For example, we may decide not to steal or lie to get ahead, which may very well keep us out of trouble but often just gives us a satisfaction that has no equal. Having a reputation for honesty can be very advantageous in the work market. While having money may provide a measure of security the bible may be even better than money in that area. Bible principles of hard work, soberness and honesty are attractive to employers, customers and others. The bible discourages expensive habits like borrowing money, gambling and alcohol abuse.
Another way the bible helps people is by promoting high moral standards. The bibles high moral standards can prevent sexually transmitted disease, unwanted pregnancies, broken families, murder, jail time, alcohol abuse, child abuse and many more evils of our society.
Another aspect of the bible is its superior intelligence. The bible always agrees with what we know as true science even when the ideas of the time of writing are so far from reality. For example Job 26: 7 mentions "Hanging the earth upon nothing" long before people knew what a planet was. Isaiah 40: 22 mentions "the circle of the earth" long before Christopher Columbus was born. The law the Israelites used required circumcision of the male children on the eighth day after birth. The circumcision provided an extra measure of cleanliness. Vitamin K and Prothrombin are both nutrients that assist the blood clotting process. The vitamin K and Prothrombin levels would peak on the eighth day, making it the perfect time to perform the circumcision. Did the Israelites just pick that day by coincidence?
Just one more idea to think about is the book of Isaiah. Some claim, because of its accuracy, that it was written after the events it foretells. That's a logical conclusion to make but some of the events are about the life of Jesus. The older copies of Isaiah have been studied and scientifically proven to have been written at least 100 years before Jesus birth.
Some of the bibles advice:
Proverbs 15:17> Better is a dish of vegetables where there is love than a manger-fed bull and hatred along with it.
Proverbs 21:17> He that is loving merriment will be an individual in want; he that is loving wine and oil will not gain riches.
Proverbs 22:1> A name is to be chosen rather than abundant riches; favor is better than even silver and gold.
Proverbs 22:6> Train up a boy according to the way for him; even when he grows old he will not turn aside from it.
Proverbs 22:29> Have you beheld a man skillful in his work? Before kings is where he will station himself; he will not station himself before commonplace men.
Ecclesiastes 7:12> For wisdom is for a protection [the same as] money is for a protection; but the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom itself preserves alive its owners.
Luke 21:34> "But pay attention to yourselves that your hearts never become weighed down with overeating and heavy drinking and anxieties of life, and suddenly that day be instantly upon you
Romans 13:9> For the [law code], "You must not commit adultery, You must not murder, You must not steal, You must not covet," and whatever other commandment there is, is summed up in this word, namely, "You must love your neighbor as yourself."
1 Corinthians 6:18> Flee from fornication. Every other sin that a man may commit is outside his body, but he that practices fornication is sinning against his own body
Hebrews 13:5> Let [YOUR] manner of life be free of the love of money, while you are content with the present things. For he has said: "I will by no means leave you nor by any means forsake you."
